Cullerlie Stone Circle

Most stone circles are similar; Cullerlie is not. Most circles were built about four thousand years ago, and were believed to be astronomical in nature, and only much later cairns for the dead. Cullerlie, however, was built over thirty-five hundred years ago, and it has eight burial cairns inside the circle of eight standing stones, built concurrently. Seven of the eight cairns are surrounded by kerb stones. The avenue leading to the circle is lined by trees in a dramatic approach, despite the power pylon right next to the circle.
